Appendix A.  Mammals

We found 39 species of mammals, ranging in size from the 5-in. North American Deermouse to the 50-ft. Humpback Whales. For a few of them we only saw one - American Marten, Coyote, Collared Pika – but most were seen repeatedly and often for long views such as the bears at Hyder and Denali National Park and the Sea Otters and Steller’s Sea Lions in Prince William Sound. The most often reported mammal was Red Squirrel, occurring on 24 days of the trip and probably more, since it became easy to ignore this scolding climber. Moose were quite common, being seen on 23 days. Surprising to me was the number of Black Bear sightings: at least 25 bears seen a total of 12 days during the trip and 21 foxes on 10 days. A few of the mammals were ones I’d not seen before: the Canadian Lynx on the Richardson Highway, the American Marten at Fish Lake, the Taiga Voles at Mendeltna and the Tundra Voles at Gambell.
