Appendix A.  Bird List - 601 Species

On the last birding days at La Pesca we worked hard at breaking a milestone. In prior years our caravan birders broke the 400-species barrier, just barely. When I first laid out the new route that included both central and eastern Mexico, as well as more territory in Belize, I knew we would be exploring additional biogeography. My goal was to break the 500-species barrier. That number was reached early in this trip, so after that I was content with just birding and seeing new species occasionally. But as we crossed over into Tamaulipas with 590 species, we were approaching another centennial milestone. At Tampico we added two more to the list, leaving eight as the target for La Pesca. In fact, we found nine additional species, bringing our grand total to 601 species, of which 544 were in Mexico and 314 in Belize. (The combined AOU list for the two countries is 1091, so our group found 55% of that total).

Of these, Coen identified 535 and Brenda had 525. Chris and May had around 530 species. Lee must have been in this range as well, but he does not keep a list. My own total came to 503 species, a number I am quite happy with, given the time I spent on non-birding activities. Birders who have traveled extensively through Mexico and Central America still managed to see 35-60 life birds on the trip. For the newcomers to these birding areas, probably everyone found over 100 life birds and at least two birders added 200+ to their life lists. But not everything is numbers and, in fact, many of the birders didn't keep lists and just enjoyed seeing the beautiful and unusual birds and studying them at leisure.

List includes 601 species plus 29 additional forms, morphs and subspecies (marked with askerisk)
